The Chiropractic Approach - Drug Free Healing
Chiropractic is now the world's largest drug-free healing profession with over 66,000 practitioners. All 50 states license Doctors of Chiropractic and they are considered primary health care providers. Over twenty-two Chiropractic colleges offer four year doctoral programs after students have completed the necessary undergraduate curriculum.
Attempts to compare Chiropractic to traditional medicine creates an "apples and oranges" situation. Each is different. Each has its own strengths and place. Medicine is effective in crisis care, emergency treatment for trauma, accident, disease and immediate life threatening conditions. Chiropractic provides totally unique health care providing individual health enhancement through the correction of vertebral subluxation.
It is this non-duplicating care that separates modern Chiropractic from all other forms of treatment. Chiropractors do not attempt to treat disease, although many specific conditions heal with Chiropractic care and studies have documented its superiority over medical treatment in many situations. Chiropractic enhances the health of the individual by correcting nerve interference (vertebral subluxation).
The Chiropractic approach logically recognizes that illness is a part of health, no the opposite of it. When you are sick, you still have your health. The quality of health is just less for that time being. Without your health you would be dead!
"How do you feel today?" defines health only by its symptoms. The answers, "I'm fine" or "I feel good" do not mean you are without disease. It makes more sense to keep ourselves healthy by doing those things which enhance our health and well-being so cancer cells can't even begin to grow.
Chiropractors recognize that health is a process and not an "either - or" healthy or sick proposition. They know that to remain healthy they must do healthy things regularly. Traditional medicine correctly teaches us to look for the signs of a disease, as with the seven danger signs of cancer. Yet because Chiropractic philosophy is health based, rather than disease based, it tells us to look for signs of health and encourages that natural "physis" or innate intelligence to keep us healthy in the first place.
Both the traditional disease focus of medicine and the modern open-ended health focus of Chiropractic are required for optimal health and wellness.
